Platinum Stars have entered into a new era after the launch of the club's new nickname, 'Dinaledi', at the home match against Mamelodi Sundowns on October 28.
Following their acquisition by Royal Bafokeng Holdings, the club have been rebranded and one of the decisions taken was to move away from the 'Tycoons' nickname by which they had been known, as this was directly related to former owner Joseph 'Tycoon' Mapfulagasha, who sadly passed away in September. Stars decided that the general public would be the ones to choose the new nickname for the club, and held a competition on Radio Mafisa and North West FM asking fans to submit their suggestions for the new name. Out of the hundreds of entries that came in, it was decided that the seTswana word 'Dinaledi', which literally means 'Stars' was the best fit for the team going forward. " There have been a lot of changes at Platinum Stars in recent times and this is just another step into what we believe will be a bright future of the club," managing director Ian Riddick says. "We listened to the fans and their suggestions and in the end chose Dinaledi, which is a wonderful nickname for the club." Dinaledi has now been officially adopted as the nickname of the club and will appear on all future branding associated with the club.
